Our Planet - our oceans

“Consider them both, the sea & land; do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself?” Herman Melville - did you know that 63 BILLION gallons of oil are used every year to supply JUST the US with plastic to make water bottles. Average life span of that bottle - 12 minutes! Did you know, just in the US, we throw away 500 million straws a day! That’s enough to fill 125 school buses! Every year we put 2 million TONS of plastic into our landfills. 80% of plastic debris in our oceans come from the land! 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. Scientist, estimate there are 5 trillion pieces of plastic a float in our oceans world wide. The ocean supplies protein to some 2.6 billion people. Yet here in Florida, a state senator wants to ban cities that want to pass laws to ban plastic straws. It takes 500 years or more for plastic straws to breakdown! Put it this way If old Christopher Columbus had a straw and one blew off the deck, it would be In our ocean in 1992! We have a saying in the restaurant industry, “work smarter not harder!” We can’t pass laws that don’t make sense. We need to look around at other cities and different countries and start educating the public. We need to start composting facilities!#foodwaste #education #ocean
